It is best to do a little research either online or at your local public library. Unfortunately, when this question is asked here, many ignorant people come forth to tell you Hitler "was a genius" or "saved Germany's economy" all the while IGNORING what he did to his own people. Yes, Hitler and his thugs in the SS murdered Germans - either the S.A. (fellow Nazis who helped Hitler gain power), German Communists, Socialists, and anti-fascists, the mentally retarded, Gypsies, and Jews. Millions more died in the Second World War.

Hitler and the Nazis had many plans, such as increasing the size of the German Reich - at the expense of the Eastern European people's lives, and were responsible for the deaths of millions in Germany and Europe from 1933 -1945, yet people here tell you what he did for Germany's economy.

Now that is what I call ignorant.

Some basic facts you really need to know:

Hitler was indeed a charismatic speaker. He was also a mass murderer. He had a pathological hatred against Jewish people. At that time in Germany, the Jews were the most assimilated they had ever been. In other words, they were not living separately or anything, they were marrying non Jews, and were innocent citizens who were working hard and contributing a lot to German society.

You have to appreciate that Germany was believed, in general, to be a very 'cultured' and 'intellectual' country. Art, music, literature; all were appreciated and admired.

But as in Poland and Austria, there was a dormant anti semitism (anti Jewish racism) that Hitler managed to tap into. He had a very specific goal: the total extermination of every single Jew, everywhere. Starting with Europe.

Hitler used propoganda; in the media, the most terrible stories and cartoons would appear, demonising the Jews and repeating over and over, day in, day out, that the Jews were 'sub human' and to blame for all of Germany's problems. Total rubbish, of course. But Hitler, through clever use of the media, managed to turn the Jews into a scapegoat.

The Jews were rounded up and told they were being sent to 'work' in remote parts of the country. But they were taken, by train, to the concentration camps. Once there, they were murdered - SIX MILLION were killed. This is the official figure; there is a tremendous amount of evidence. The Jews were killed in gas chambers, they were burned to death, and they were used by Mengele, another Nazi, in grotesque 'experiments'. I won't go into details here because it's enough to make any person throw up - indeed, the British soldiers who liberated the camps after the war did often throw up and remained deeply traumatized by what they found there.

Millions of non Jews were also killed. Hitler wanted to create a 'master race' of 'Aryans' who had blond hair and blue eyes. So gypsies, gays, and anybody who was not 'pure' was put to death.

Hitler was also a personal friend of Arab leaders out in the middle east. They assured him they would carry out his 'final solution of the Jews' in Palestine and kill every single Jew living there.

That's a brief summary. It's a highly upsetting topic but it's vital that everyone knows about it - we must make sure that nothing so terrible ever happens again.

Good question Annakay but first, Hitler didn't kill thousands he killed among others, 6 million Jews and over 6 million people of other nationalities and ethnicity's. He was particular death on gypsies, homosexuals, and people with medical disorders. Schlafen's answer is pretty good as far as it goes but he's 'schlafen' in on respect. There is a resurgence of the nazi ideal in Germany today and suddenly not all Germans are ashamed of Hitler. But on the whole I liked his answer, he did bring up the man's abused youth, though I'm not sure what this had to do in later life, but he didn't mention that Hitler is suspected of having an STD and was on a variety of drugs during his days as Der Fuhrer. Hitler was on the whole not a very nice person and needs to be reviled by all of mankind.

He NEVER killed thousands of people as most would have you think. Israel declared war on Germany before hitler even came to power as a general. The Christian version of the holocaust was never able to be verified. Professional investigators were sent, and the only German camps they found had cabins, pools, hang out rooms, and bars. There were special chambers were they put all of their dirty laundry and used zycon-B (a gas) to fumigate them. Calculations were carefully made, and these chambers could never possibly hold the amount of Jew that people claim were all gassed at once. They did have cremation ovens for dead Nazi troops that were killed in battle, however, not nearly enough to stuff a bunch of dead Jews into to be burned. The Holocaust never happened.

when JRR Tolkien was writing Lord of the Rings, he used Hitler as a model for Sauron.

That should give you an idea how evil this man was.

Correction- He killed millions. He was raised in
an abusive household and wanted world domination. He was a racist, a nut case and charismatic. Germany was so broke from WWI that the people were reaching to anyone that promised hope. Otherwise, he would have never been Der Fuhrer. Germans today are ashamed of this history and are not Nazis.

German leader who drove Germany out of a great depression. All his life he blamed Jews for unfortunate situations in his life (Ex: mothers death of cancer- the doctor was Jewish) and he believed the Aryan race should rule the world (blue eyes, blonde hair)

For more just search Hitler in google.
