I think the ultimate, and truly great, urban book is THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, by Nelson Algren.

Urban books is mostly street culture, African-American, hip-hop, so these recommendations do not convey that experience directly.

"Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, is about her real-life experience carrying her baby to birth, and earning her Ph.D. at the same time. It is funny, warm, and profound for anyone.

"When Invisible Children Sing," Huang, M.D., a young doctor at Harvard Medical College, son of immigrants, who dedicates his time to serving street children in the capitol city of Bolivia.

"Stay Alive, My Son," Pin Yathay. A young Buddhist gives his true story of escaping from the Khmer Rouge oppression.

"The Reincarnation of Edgar Cayce?", Free and Wilcock, a true story of one young man's journey of understanding.

"Hope Rising," Kim Meeder, true stories of horses rescued from terrible abuse, and the children who are also healed by working with the horses.

"Eyes of the Tailless Animals," Soon Ok Lee, a young North Korean gives her true story of escape from North Korean communist oppressors.

"Tortured for Christ," Reverend Richard Wurmbrand. A Jewish Christian recounts his standing for Jesus in Nazi Germany and Soviet Communist oppression.

These are all true stories of great love and faith, and would likely inspire and educate anyone who is benefitting from urban books genre.
