Because Norman Bates resembled a true serial killer, Ed Gein. He loved his mother so much that he dressed like her. Ed Gein said he wore womens body parts because he wanted to be like his dead mother. Gore is not scary. Gore is nasty. Alfred Hitchcock's movies were so scary because you didn't see everything. That made your mind have to work. Land of the Dead was stupid because it will never happen. Saw was gross and disturbing. I haven't seen I Am Legend. Nothing beats the old psychological thrillers.

Its the psychological aspect of this movie. The shower scene of course is something that comes to peoples mind some even have thought that she was completely nude but never once did hitchcock do a nude scene in this movie and people trick their minds to believing she is naked. This movie is a classic and will continue to be.

it was because at the time it was a very daring move to make by killing off the so called leading lady! i don't rate it much either but we tend to wrongly compare things from our time to those of our parents or grandparents time! we as a race have become desensitized to such gore in saw that the older movies now seem tame!
im with you though, the gorrier and more horrific=the better,as long as theres a creditable story!

At the time is was extremely scary and because it is very loosely based on Ed Gein a serial killer. He killed women based on his obsession with his dead mother. He found his victims though, he didn't let them find him. He also used their bones and skin as items in the house such as belts, curtains, bowls, chair covers etc.

I'll try.......
A) Psycho is not a horror film. Hitchcock did not make horror films. It's a suspense/thriller designed to keep you in suspense from start to finish with the unknown. As in all his films, Hitchcock suceeds using his masterful ability as a filmmaker.
B) It's not what you see, it's what you don't see.........something most filmmakers today could really learn from.

Because I don't think audiences of that time had ever seen anyone killed in the shower before and it had a big impact on people
