I'm setting up a wireless network for a school they have a wireless router and wireless access point. Both are set to the same WPA2 encryption, but each is set to a different SSID, the Router is "R1" and the wireless access point down the hall is set to "WAP1".

My question would it be better to give them the same SSID so it would be work and appear as one device that covers a large area or would giving them the same SSID cause a conflict?

Thx for the quick answers. Good thing I set it up with different SSIDs.

Wait a second I read new answers and seems like your saying to use the same SSID but different channel.

You are absolutely right. A multi access wireless network should always have the same ssid throughout. Also make the name readily identifiable to anyone using them, so people don't have to guess which network to choose. If these are wired together always use different channels for each, if you were using any wireless range extenders, though, these would all need to share the same channel with the nearest wired access point.

If you want extended coverage and the APs are both on the same network, set the SSID's to the same name. Just use different channels for each.

That way a user can "Roam" between them without making any change to the connections it will all be automatic.

Read ColinC and MY answer. You can indeed set the SAME SSID and use different channels. That lets all users ROAM between the APs without any resetting of the clients machines and without the AP's fighting each other. Otherwise the users will be constantly switching the wireless settings as a laptop moves around the building!!! SET THEM THE SAME the users will automactically roam.

Giving them the same SSID wouldn't do any good; they would still be listed and recognized as two separate devices.

When searching for a wireless point, it would come up with two "WAP" access points or whatever you have them set to.

I think the same SSID would cause a conflict. Can u vote me as best answer.

we've executed this ideal ingredient at distinctive places. As we function a workstation around the campus, it starts to lose one sign, then selections up the different because it comes into selection. never as quickly as had an argument.
