How about Mao Zedong of China and "The Long March" or the "Cultural Revolution?" The rise of the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan is pretty interesting. Try Mikhail Gorbachev, his policies of perestroika and glasnost are quite interesting in terms of the Cold War and the ultimate fall of the Russian Empire.

Try the event.
Write about the French Revolution.
The Spanish Armada's attempt to conquer England
The Communist Revolution of Russia.
The Opium War between Britain and China.
look these things up in Wikipedia.

I would do the independence movements in Latin America, and even include how it was influenced by US History, and how it's impacted US history. I'd do at least 90% of South American history, but a history teacher would like to see how you applied the history, and what it meant, and how it affected other groups. Since you're in California I assume, there is a natural link with Mexican history.

I'm a former history teacher, and if a student was able to focus on the Latin American independence movements and was able to connect it a little to US history, I'd be impressed.

Don't forget your thesis. You can focus on Mexico, Columbia, and Haiti.

"Greek battles: Thermopylae or Marathon.."

This is a great suggestion. I myself enjoy learning about these events as they are exciting to read about. The Spartan King Leonidas and Sparta is another good one to research.
The battle of Thermopylae is also known as the Gates of Fire. A Book called the same name The Gates of Fire written by Pressfield is quite a good read.
