So I am just starting to read up on what everyones arguments are - I want to be in the know. But I need a good, true source on what these candidates are preaching?

If someone would provide a link or give me a brief rundown of what these candidates are "promising" that would be much appreciated! Thanks!

As long as you are familiar with their policies (from their websites), the 2nd rule should always be to "follow the money".

Take a look at the website in the source, and compare who gets what, how much, and from whom. Often, the largest contributors are who the candidates are really beholden to. Check out their voting records on some of the other sites you have been given.

Select your candidates that you want further information on, and then click along the left side to see all the information for "Top Contributors", Industries, Personal Finances, and other pertinent information.

No president has to legally keep any promises they made (case in point, GWB), so be careful and watchful of whomever you decide. Good luck, and congrats on becoming a well-informed voter. You had some other good answers as well. Don't believe everything you see on Y!A, almost everyone has an agenda here, and very rarely do you get unbiased information.

If you only concern yourself with what the candidates "promise" you will not only be less informed but you will be mis-informed.
You really have to see what they have actually done. What sort of legislation have they already supported? How have they applied the power they have held? What they promise you when they are campaigning is totally useless.

To quote George Stephanopolis when he was Bill Clinton's press Secretary and he was asked if the President will keep the promises he made during the campaign, he replied,"The President has kept all the promises he intended to keep."

Happy New Year!

http://www.vote-smart.org and open secrets
Project Vote Smart is where I am doing research at and finding out what special interest groups have given the candidates the highest and lowest ratings for their support. Open Secrets has the financial donations given to the different candidates.
I think it's great that you are willing to do the research your self. Don't take any thing that people say here too seriously-they have their own biases-find out for your self. That is why I purposely did not tell you who I think you should vote for, 8:)

Wikipedia has a decent amount of not-too-biased information on those people, and is a good place to start you quest for knowledge. You can always check the links at the bottom of each page, and be sure to check the sources (always).

The best way to research is to go to the source itself. Visit each candidates web page. That way you are basing your opinion upon yourself and not the thoughts of others.

Is a good website as well. Do the vote match to find the candidate that has views that are closest to yours. You'll also be able to see who is farthest from your views.
