The overall accomplishment of the Democrat-controlled congress is a return to their party's practice of "symbolism over substance". Specifically, they passed resolutions that had no force, they passed bills guaranteed to be vetoed, and they stood in the way of federal judge appointments. Like their speeches and photo-ops, this all made their supporters feel good. As long as the Democrats achieve feel-good symbolism, what more is needed? Expect more of the same next year, like:
- "Federal tax cuts only benefit the wealthier half of Americans" (Is anyone else paying federal taxes? Official records say no.)
- "War is bad. War is unpopular." (Duh. Such comments might be useful if there was anyone in America going to war because they felt it's a good thing or because it's popular.)
- "We can say anything bad about our President that we want, and because it goes unchallenged it must be true." (George W. Bush promised civility between his administration and the Democratic opposition, and continues to keep that promise. Are there any Democrats who can recognize a President being presidential, or do they all expect behavior like Clinton's?)
- "The Government just isn't spending enough money, therefore we need to raise tax rates!" As JFK explained 45 years ago and every current economist can prove, tax revenues increase only if the tax rates drop below their current levels. Plentiful tax revenues come from a thriving economy, and you don't help the economy by taking money out of it. The current Bush tax cuts actually increased tax revenues, as the record shows.
- "If we send two dozen Democrats to the talk shows every weekend, and they all use the word 'failure' when discussing every accomplishment of the Bush administration and military, then it will become the accepted wisdom of the American public." (Fortunately, most Americans are not this stupid.)
Truth, facts, action, and meaningful accomplishments are not the goals of the current Democrat-controlled congress. Scoring political points, raising funds, manipulating the press, shaping the next presidential election, and the appearance of caring are the primary goals instead. So, did they accomplish what they set out to accomplish?

Pelosi as speaker was a great accomplishment! This move shows us how wacko the left really is and proves that the real direction of the democratic party is towards the "new communism" vision of the liberals. Yeah, I know, as some of you liberals have pointed out in your posts, the "new communism" is WAY different than what the Soviets had.

The fact that The Dem led Congress has cut pork spending by over half from the 05, and 06 totals is their greatest accomplishment. So much for Republican fiscal responsibility.

The were very effective in blaming everything on the Republicans. But they were good at that before they were elected.
They were able to get a lower approval rating than Bush.
They were able to promise a change of course in the war, but then give Bush everything he wants.
The biggest accomplishment, though, has to be that they proved to the American people that voting for them in '06 was a huge mistake.

I've heard that several Democratic congressmen were able to match their belts with their shoes. Also, many remembered to wear red ties to celebrate the holidays. That has got to count for something.

Well, in their first 100 days they got the troops home from Iraq, stopped earmarks on bills, ended global warming, initiated universal health care in the U.S. and cleaned up all the ethically challenged in congress. thank heavens for the health care stuff, i need it for my meds.
