My guppies, sadly are kept in coldwater with my 3 goldfish. The man who works at the fish store has guppies stored with goldfish - it was on display, my mum asked him was it okay to keep them with goldfish, he said it was absolutely fine. Once i found out the guppies were tropical, i did'nt know what to do. My guppies are pregnant and i can see their gravid spot, i think they ARE getting bigger week by week. On the internet, from my research i found that pregnant guppies would give birth every four weeks(ON AVERAGE). Im just wondering, will they still give birth? - Since they are kept in coldwater and they havent got a heater! Ive kept them in there for about 3 months now - and they havent given birth!
This is really worrying me.
Help please. x

If i add a heater to the tank, will it affect the goldfish? And - if they dont give birth will they die?

Your guppies have probably given birth a couple of times already. The goldfish are thanking you for providing them with the tastey treats!
Goldfish like cooler temperatures and guppies don't mind low 70's so if your house is at a normal temperature then they will probably be fine. If they've lived 3 months under those conditions already I wouldn't worry.

Guppies can actually do fine with a temperature range in the mid 60°F to lower 80°F range.

So, depending on what the tank temperature is, they may be just fine. But, when water temperatures start dropping below 65°F, you need to start feeding the goldies, and I"m guessing also the guppies, a vegetable based diet, like wheat germ. What happens is around 65°F, their metabolism will start slowing down, and they won't be able to digest protein foods very well. It'll end up just sitting in their stomachs and intestines rotting, which can lead to all kinds of problems. So just monitor the temp.
The fact that they're breeding, is a good sign that they're doing ok. Most if not all, of the fry/babies will most likely be eaten by the guppies or the goldfish. If you want to keep them, you're best bet would be to get a separate tank for the fry.
As mentioned, you can add a heater to the tank with the goldfish. Just keep it at a low setting, around 72-74°F, that way the temperature won't fluctuate, it'll stay constant. And they should do well with that range. Keep in mind, lower temperatures, lowers the metabolism, which causes a slow down in growth.

Add a heater to the tank. Heaters will not hurt the goldfish, actually they are good as they regulate water temp which is good for any fish and absolutely required by others. Goldfish are quite adaptable moreso than tropical fish.
Also goldfish grow to be rather large and if you have a 10 gallon tank you have way too many fish in there. 20 even is really small. I say this because as the guppies breed you will have more of them (even though the goldfish and guppies will eat them.) If you want to breed guppies get another tank, although once they start breeding and you have all those fish you need to know what to do with them

Hi.
Those guppies need their own tank. Like the internet has told you, they're tropical fish and shouldn't be kept in coldwater tanks. Especially not with goldfish because once the goldies get big enough, they'll eat the guppies. The link below will give you more information.

I suspect the man in the pet store keeps the goldfish and guppies together to keep down his guppy population.
If you want to breed the guppies, they'll need warmer water, their own tank and so on. But be careful or in a few months you'll be hip deep in guppies!

I HAVE GUPPIES TOO,THEY ALSO LIVE IN NORMAL WATER,ITS COLD,THE GUPPIES WILL STILL GIVE BIRTH,BUT ITS EASIER TO GIVE BIRTH IN WARMER TEMP.SO MAYBE TAKE THE PREGNANT GUPPIES OUT AND PUT IT IN LITE A SMALL CONTAINER AND LET HER DO HER THING AND WHEN SHE GIVES BIRTH MAKE SURE THAT THE MOTHER DOESN'T SEE OR EAT THE FRY...KEEP THEM IN A SEPARATE TANK FOR 5WKS.FEED THEM BLOOD WORMS AND THE DAILY FOOD...HOPE FOR THE BEST

even if they give birth, the young will die in cold water, if they aren't eaten first by the goldfish.

Well if the conditions arent right they wont give birth.
if they do they will either die because it is to cold (take out the dead ones to prevent amonia) or they will get eaten
