They are variables, unknowns, values that can be anything, any number. They are used to represent general values.
Eg:
3x+y=1
here x and y are called variables. One possible value for x is 0 and for y is 1. If you put x=0 and y=1, you get 1 as the answer, that on the other side of the equal sign. Other values are 1 and -2 ; 2 and -5 and so on. x and y are the variables that represent generalised values.
