Desktops will give you more bang for your buck. If you do buy a laptop, get the 3 year warranty with accidental damage protection. This will add some cost to your laptop, but if anything happens to your display you'll be thankful. Extended warranties aren't worth your money for desktops since the parts are interchangable. Laptop displays are the biggest concern since they can run upwards of $400-500 to replace if damaged or defective. If portability is a convienence not a necessity, go with a desktop.

For a 3-4 year period, I would definitely go for a desktop because laptops are prone to damage. A laptop's power cord malfunctions very easily also. Desktops are cheaper and you could get a good gaming desktop much cheaper than a gaming laptop. Try this site for top of the line models which range from 2000 dollars. http://www.widowpc.com/2005/06/gaming_desktops.php

Extreme gaming... Right now there is basically no other choice except get a desktop and buy an ATI 3850 video card for $170 or so. A $5000 laptop won't even come close to such a setup. The new 8800GT is better for $250 or so but it is hard to find. For editing, a dual-core processor will be helpful.

Desktop definitely as they can fit bigger components which means more power. i had a laptop 2 years ago for a year was ok but I switched to a desktop which I buil t myself for the first time and am very pleased with its performance. Also I feel with laptops your paying alot for something not as good as a desktop for the same price. I'd look at a PC with Intel core 2 duo 2ghz+, 4GB DDR2 RAM, A decent motherboard (Asus P5K), a good graphics card I wouldnt bother with DirectX10 yet just get a high end DirectX9 graphics card

and a decent PSU that is a well known brand 500W whould be plently look at Corsair for PSUs

While desktops last longer, if you just need something for a 3-4 year term you should get a laptop. A VAIO is pretty good. for gaming and all that.

Just depends on your preferences. They make laptops equal pretty much to desktops. Do you want to take it with you or not?

Dell XPS isn't what it used to be unless you get the high end XPS. Dell is a great computer but service stinks. I'll never recommend it for someone who isn't pretty computer savvy.

The best is to have someone build you a liquid cooled duo or quad system specifically with your needs and wants in mind and ignore all the add ons you get with a factory made computer.

pass with a mac workstation. the hot OS X "Leopard" can do way greater advantageous than vista anyhow, and there are video games accessible for mac. Oct. twenty 6th i'm making plans on procuring the hot iMac for $1199 if it comes pre put in wth leopard. anyhow, a mac is plenty greater stable than a working laptop or workstation, i take advantage of them the two interior the comparable day (macs in school, my workstation at domicile) and that i admire mac using fact the OS isn't a POS. domicile windows freezes for all time and consistently is susceptible to viruses which may even wreck your hard rigidity. Mac's are based on the unix OS, a single kernel working gadget, which makes them plenty much less susceptible. in case you think of approximately it, mac is a greater effective purchase than workstation, useful it value slightly greater advantageous than a working laptop or workstation, yet interior the top it could even out. purchase a webcam, anti virus, in all risk spend money repairing stupid blunders on your workstation, upload some desent application and you in all risk spent greater advantageous than that on a working laptop or workstation, once you have in basic terms offered a mac. And the OS will take some day to learn if that, it quite is plenty greater uncomplicated to function than a working laptop or workstation. And apple has a help menu interior the menu bar that has workstation to Mac translations (all courses=macintosh hd, and so on.)
