the summer after next, my friend & i plan on going to italy for the summer. ive heard that summer is a really bad time to go though because locals will be out of school/work & things will be more expensive. i will be out of school by then so it wont really be a big deal going during a different time of the year. what is the best time to go, for at least a couple months, & about how much will it be to rent an apartment or villa. one bedroom is fine, it doesnt have to be really spacey, but somewhere in or near the city. neither of us have ever been out of the US, and i would need to get a passport. also, how old do you have to be to rent a car in italy; my friend will be 20, 21 if we go after sept. 09

i know this is a loaded question but if anyone knows roughly how much everything would cost (airfare, transportation, a place to stay, food, rent.....), please let me know

& what is the best part to visit. florence, milan, rome...also, has anyone been to empoli, how is it there? thanx

Hi there,
I'm Italian so let me try to help you.First of all, talking about how much your gonna spend is a little bit difficult.I mean, it really depends on where you are going. If you choose Venice, Milan, Rome or Florence well we are talking about the most expensive places. The rent for a studio flat, namely a one bedroom apartment, can be around 500€ per month.
Here in Italy you can rent a car when you turn 18.Of course you need a passport and I've never been to Empoli so I can't tell.If you just need to ask me something else, feel free to get back to me.
Ciao.

It's going to be VERY expensive, and you won't be permitted to work.

Google flights now and see what they cost for July and August.

Google long-term budget accommodation in Italy and see what that will cost you, again, for the interesting places, it's not going to be cheap.

And car hire companies do not hire to people aged 21. It's my understanding you have to be 26 or older, but you'd have to check with the individual companies. In any case, petrol is expensive, and Italian drivers are INSANE, so you'd be far better off using public transport, there's a great train and bus network in Italy, and if it's good enough for the locals, it's good enough for you.

One way of possibly managing to live in Italy for a longish stretch of time is to volunteer, on a farm perhaps, depending on your experience. Many places provide basic accommodation and meals for their volunteers, some can even stretch to pocket money, but not all. Basically you'd be working for your bed and board, and you'd have to put in several hours during the day, very possibly in searing heat, but it's more likely that you'll be starting work at 5 am or so and working until it becomes too hot to work, and then you'd go in for a siesta for a few hours until it cools down enough to work outside for a few hours again. You wouldn't be doing much touristy stuff, but you would have a lot of contact with locals, and very possibly learn some useful skills. Google the Wooffer programme, this might be something for you.

Look for jobs teaching English as a foreign language. Google "TEFL jobs Italy" or something like that. Working is definitely the cheapest way to spend time abroad! Any company offering you a job should be able to help with accommodation.

As you seem to be American, you'll need to check out getting a work permit for the EU. This would be a wise move as it'll allow you to work in other countries in Europe too. There are companies who will help you do this, google for them.
