i feel as though we are appreciating the simple, relaxing things less and less, which is a shame.

Lots of people do, including me.

More and more often, I'm opening a book in the evening instead of turning on the TV or turning my brain to ooze with vapid web sites.

And I feel better for it, too--my brain works better, I'm more alert, etc.

Books exercise the imagination!

For Christmas my thirteen year old received at least twelve different books from me. He was thrilled! He also bought me a few books because he knows that we won't even turn on the tv most nights, but instead, we will each claim a corner of the living room and delve into our secret worlds.

Yes, we still enjoy a book over the internet or a tv program! Sadly, this is not true for many these days and I feel sadness for these folks who are not near as well rounded individuals as those who take the time to appreciate a good author.

Yes. I am. I enjoy reading the book "Elsewhere". That's an excellent book.
Yes, I feel we are appreciating the simple relaxing things less and less also. It is a shame. Technology is taking over our lives. Between tv, computer, video games, texting, ipods, etc., we can never seem to find "peace time" & just relax.

I find it appalling that few of my friends read any more. I still enjoy books in their original format. I could not imagine reading a whole novel off the computer screen. I like the heft of a book, and the suspense of turning pages. My mornings would not be complete without a couple of hours at my favorite cafe, reading first the daily news paper and then burying myself in whatever novel I'm doing at the time. Right now I'm reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson which was a Xmas present from a friend. I'm also reading (My nighttime reading at home is devoted to non-fiction) Dark Victory: the Life of Bette Davis by Ed Sikov, another Xmas present from a friend.

Yep! I do! If I find a really good book I'm absorbed by it and nothing can tear me away...well, nothing but a good idea and a clean screen to type on. I love to write, which was what pushed me to read more.

And unlike most people my age, I don't like to watch TV. I don't even have cable! Most of the shows I watch, I watch online, but I'm more interested in written stories then acted out stories. Written stories actually make you feel like you're there, watching everything unfold. While the TV really just makes you excited, but not like you're actually experiencing it.

I don't know why most people these days don't like to curl up on the couch with a good book and a bunch of cookies and milk. It makes me feel relaxed after a stressful day. People should try it more often then sitting in front of the TV with potatoe chips. That'll just kill brain cells.

I do prefer reading a book than to watch a movie, but I will watch a movie from a book that I had read to get the full experience of the book. Sometimes what I read I can't picture well until I see it on a film. But sometimes I can't watch a movie because they don't follow the book at all, there was one I actually walked out of because of it (Eragon).

I totally agree with you. I work at a library and more people spend their waking moments on the computers than checking out books. Society is slowly becoming the societies in Fahrenheit 451 or 1984 where books are banned, censorship is legal, and having a personal opinion will get you kill. People are becoming idiots. It hard having a conversation with people because the things they want to talk about are so stupid. They have no personality unless you consider a redneck with a drinking problem who have a TV in every room in their house who having drug troubles with their prostitute daughter something you want to talk about.

I love just losing myself in a book. I started reading at a very young age and have continued to do so. i do watch alot of TV but I think i read more than watch. especially if the book is one of those can't put downs.

I don't even own a TV; no interest in having one. I read books often as well as journals, newspapers and items on the computer. I also listen to the radio daily.
