All I can say is that there is no logic behind the "Cuban Embargo", that is still in place after forty years.
For all whom don't know, Cuba turns out some of the very best doctors in the world. And they also have the largest volunteer medical doctors working all over the world with poor people.
Americans who are turned away from an emergency room, because they have no health insurance or money to pay can go to Cuba and get free treatment. In the poor areas of Venezuela, almost every doctor is a volunteer medical doctor from Cuba. And that goes for most of Central & South America.
And then when they come back to American, and try to pass through customs they are charged with a Federal crime for visting Cuba that can cost the loss of passport, fines and even jail time. (Requires a special Lic., from your State Dept. to visit Cuba). Usually reserved for professors, doctors jornalist or other high ranking professions that is approved by your State Dept.
Prefer to refrain on being negative about the American Govt., when it relates to this issue. Being that I am not from your country.
A speical thanks to Scourge, for telling it like it is.

Totalitarian dictatorships are not favorites of the folks that rule the U.S. Those same folks have determined that the best weapon against the criminal gangs controlling countries like Cuba is to cut 'em off without a dime. End of story. A very, very long story (MUCH longer than 40 years).

Yes, Cuba is a wonder place to live. That's why they constantly try to flee to the United States.
Illicit emigration is a continuing problem; Cubans attempt to depart the island and enter the US using homemade rafts, alien smugglers, direct flights, or falsified visas; Cubans also use non-maritime routes to enter the US including direct flights to Miami and over-land via the southwest border.

Once again, talk to Cuban exiles in America. THey have a strong political presence in America. And anyone who has ever suggested lifting the embargo has met with swift resistance from this group. The Cuban exiles don't want to ban lifted until Castro is gone, so it's staying in place.

Politicians are afraid of alienating the Cuban Mafia in Miami. If they lose their votes by normalizing relations with Cuba like we should, they might lsoe the whole state of Florida.
The Elian Gionzalez matter cost Al Gore at least 600 votes. That made the difference, as did the illegal Butterfly Ballot, Ralph Nader, and the Voter Purge of valid Black voters.

The reason is simple, no president wants to be the first one to openly communicate with Fidel Castro. When he dies we will see the US and Cuban Governments start speaking.
