No, you should not be drinking when paxil or any other psychotropic medication. Paxil is an anti-depressant, alcohol is a depressant. And no, they don't simply cancel each other out.

I use to take Paxil and now I am on Lexapro. I was told by my doc that when I choose to go out and have a few drinks, I might as well not take my medicine that night cuz I will not benefit from it (I take my pill right before bed). But then the next night I resume back to my normal schedule. I don't advise drinking regularly while on antidepresants. Alcohol is a depressant. Not a good mix with an "ANTI" depressant, right?
I have never had any problems having occasional drinks while on my antidepressants.
BUT everyone should know that each person is different and things affect people differently.

NO! NO! NO! NO!
Take it from me...I was on Paxil many years ago and was told NOT to mix alcohol with it. I was stubborn so I was like "I'll just have one drink." Let me just tell you, those 2 DO NOT mix well together. I got completely spaced out and felt like I had total amnesia. For the life of me, I couldnt remember who the person next to me was (and it was my best friend!), I didnt know where I was or why I was there, and then shortly after became extremely suicidal. I was told by my friend that I walked off and sat next to a building and cried hysterically for about 20-30 min. The only thing I remember was "coming to" and wondering why the hell am I sitting here crying with my best friend comforting me.
It was such a crazy, strange, screwed up and very scary experience so my suggestion to you...DONT MIX THEM!!!!!

I am a recovered alcoholic. My last act before nearly dying--and then getting sober--was taking paxil while continuing to drink to excess. I cannot tell you how insane the combination made me; not hallucinating but irrational beyond belief, fainting, panic, etc. You may not be talking about that type of drinking, but if you are, let me tell you that it's not a good idea.

Alcohol
Although PAXIL does not increase the impairment of mental and motor skills caused by alcohol, patients should be advised to avoid alcohol while taking PAXIL.

It is not recommended. Anti depressants might be affected by the mixture. It can make you more prone to problems like a slight overdose of meds.
