The dvd player is a Samsung HD860 and the new dvd is Planet Earth HD. The player says it can not read the disk. There is a note in the box about upgrading my dvd player but am not sure how to go about this. I read the manual but it offered no help. I can't return the dvd now that it's open and short of selling it on e-bay or something I am stuck. Any ideas?

Sorry to tell you but you DON'T have an HD DVD player. You just have an Upconverting standard-def player.
So, your player can't read or play HD DVDs.

You can always return an open DVD for a sealed one (but exactly the same). Or keep it until you buy an HD player, or give it as a present to someone with an HD player.
Toshiba is desparate to get into the HD market, so they practically give HD players away (about $200, but as low as $80 in special sales in Wallmart)

I have yet to find an HD-DVD player without an HDMI port. Check your user manual. as well as taking a second look at the back of the unit.
