(according to "our" kids), were you a follower or did you pretty much do your own thing ? Do you think todays kids suffer more peer pressure that we did ?

My life was very structured and I rebelled against it. Too young to be a bohemian too old to be a hippie. Living an eccentric life in old age and loving it.

I observed then I did what I needed to do to play the game. On some things I did my own thing because I did not have the money to follow the crowd. The whole neighborhood came in when I did because my dad had the loudest whistle.

Todays children suffer much more peer pressure and expect more to be done for them. Not all but a lot of the ones I come into contact with just can't think for themselves. If they would take the earbud off they might hear their brain though. MAYBE

I was very much into doing my own thing. When people talk about thinking outside the box, I realized that I never knew there even was a box. I preferred to always be the leader so peer pressure wasnt much of a problem for me. I dont think that things are any different today from when I was growing up.

Kids today do indeed suffer more form peer pressure than we did back in our younger days. I was a follower way back then, when it came to the latest fads, etc. so I'd fit right in with the crowd, but I think that's only human nature. The only difference was, we didn't have the peer pressure like the kids do today. It's a shame really, especially when it comes to what the kids wear to school.

Thinking back to the 50's the only advertising I remember is coca cola, pepsi and 7up. our kids are bombarded with "if you don't wear this or do that" you won't be cool. The whole thing now is turning toward "our's is better than their's" and suggesting that someone has lied to you, ect. Other than that, things are pretty much the same.

You can dig very much deeper into this subject if you like, but the confusion you find will not be of much use. Our schools should stick to the three R's, home economics, how to get along with others and let the arts and sports be extras. If our children can't read n write n do math how will they ever learn to dot the Ts and cross the Is.

I pretty much did my own thing by choosing what I would or would not follow. I do think kids today have an awful lot of peer pressure on them. I don't remember that kind of pressure growing up.

I think Roseann made a valid point! Parental pressure kept us safe

I did what my strict parents allowed me to do. I thought they were Nazi descendants at the time but am thankful for it now.
As far as I am concerned if you raise your kids firmly and lovingly, teach them right from wrong, instill values and yes even put a healthy fear of your wrath in them, peer pressures are not an issue, having your parents NOT kick your butt is the issue
I mean really when I was a kid if another teen said " Hey let's smoke some weed?'My thoughts would immediately have been" No way if my dad found out I'd be dead meat!" See- no peer pressure :) Just parent pressure.

I was always independent. I wanted to be different. When everyone just loved Elvis, I said I didn't like him. Of course I did. I think there is more peer pressure today. There is a lot more to be pressured about. Most young people then didn't go to college. They went into the family business or got jobs like their dad's. Girls didn't plan careers, we though we would get married and be housewives. That's before housewife was a dirty word. Of course there was the haves and the have nots. Most of us didn't try to be one of the haves. Today's kids want it all because their friends do or act like they do.

I thought I was "doing my own thing", I was an "artist".........While everyone was wearing Villager skirts, mine was leather. I always did my best to find the most outlandish and most unusual. The strange thing is that because I was very beautiful, they overlooked my weirdness and accepted me. (That was NOT the desired effect.)

Do I think today's kids suffer from more peer pressure? No, I believe it's the same. I raised my kids to "be themselves" and they reveled in it!

Did my own thing, sometimes friends would do my own thing and sometimes I was a follower . Like today, kids liked to raise cane, if caught it was peer pressure, (there weren't too many peers when I was growin up though)
