it just started to have a hard time shifting or even going. it really wouldnt shift until i stopped. by the time i got back home (1 mile away) there was a pretty strong burning smell. would you say transmission problem or AWD system?

Dang, its not even that old and the tranny has already died. Go figure, my 2006 Chevy Cobalt tranny died at 16,607 miles, and they tried blaming GM's poor cheap aluminum crap warping on me. Then they couldn't even get the transmission fixed correctly the first time.

Get rid of it and buy a Toyota. That's what I'm doing.

Trans most likely. Check for fluid leaks & fluid level. It that doesn't look good, see if there is any warranty left. A visit to your Mercury dealer can help there. If the vehicle is out of warranty, look at the web site below. They are very good w/ trans problems & most of the time, the repair is simple and doesn't require a new trans. G'luck.
