About a 100+ years ago, much of Charleston, SC was destroyed by an earthquake. Even today, there are large screw like devices that are turned 1/4 turn every year to upright the buildings.

The first discovery of gold in the US was in North Carolina...North Carolina lead the nation in gold production until the great strike of 1849 in California....In 1799, the 12 year old son of John Reed, found a "yellow rock" in a creek while fishing....The Reed family used the rock as a door stop at their home for three years. Santa Barbara, CA has a street named after what was found there by the surveyors. Indio Muerto - "Dead Indian"

There's also a street named Salsipuedes - "Leave if you can"
