my daughter has loads of usb gadgets, and they dont work on her computer.. It says we need a usb speed 2, as the one in the computer is now fast enough. Can I change the usb port in the computer for another one?

You will need to add a USB2 card to a spare slot in your PC, various brands available, some good, some not so good. Most will have 4 or 5 outlets, you can still plug a hub into any or all, to get even more ports. Here's a Belkin 5 port, just plug it in.

It is a hardware issue that can only be solved by buying a USB 2.0 adapter. Cost ya about $25...

You need to add a PCI card for it. You can't update 1.1 USB ports. Here's a card for $10

You can buy additional internal USB hubs in PC World or from lots of sites online - they don't cost too much and I even managed to fit mine myself!!

Buy a USB hub, that should solve your problems. Then you can attach multiple USB devices to your computer.
