Gosh, the 70s weren't that long ago, but the world's ideologies -at least in the west- have progressed a lot, you rights. It has become the norm. People seem to think marriage is a trial, and they might like the product, and decide to keep it, or, they could want to return it, and do so by breaking a legal document, with a court system that allows this. I'm only teenager, so marriage is a ways off for me, but i think that people are dating for way to shot a time, and the commitment seams to be degraded, by the "Hollywood life" ideology that we've be drawn into. Now, if your in an abusive relationship, you should leave, or if your not malleable, and your personalities don't work then I think it's ok. Thankfully we don't live in a society -or at least here in Canada- where we have arranged marriages, so we can, and should really take a hard look at things, and see if the situation will work. My parents dated for 3 years, and they've been married for over 20 years. Where now, dating can last for 2-6 months (not always, but sometime) and then when you get married, your going on hope, more so that the firm believe that your marriage will last.

My parents divorced in 1974, so I know things weren't perfect back then either. My Mother has stories about her parents being divorced in the 50's. She said the neighbors treated her like garbage, and the kids never invited her to their parties. That's what happened back then when people got divorced, the whole family was shunned.

So maybe the difference between then and now is that the people who wanted to cheat or get divorced didn't because they didn't want to be a social outcast?

But back then a woman who was being abused would have no way of getting out of the marriage, where now they can. So there's good things and bad things about the ease of divorce these days.

I do believe marriage should be forever ... I've been married for 10 years now, and we're still doing great. You just have to find the right person. And then it's still not easy, you have to make it work.

Marriage is still sacred, created by God to unite and man and woman to be there for one another for whatever struggles and joys he puts through your life. Just because the "wordly view" says marriage is pointless doesnt mean everyone has that same opinion. I think in the recent years people havent been seeing how hard you have to work at keeping a healthy and successful one going. Nowadays instant gratification is key. I dont think we should ever get to a point or normacy with divorce and children with their father over the weekends. A child needs a parent much more than that.

Also. Next time you ask a question, dont start with an insult. being born in '77 does not make a person old. They are only 30. With people living to be in their 90's they havent even reached the halfway point!

Well since I was born in 1977 I didn't think 30 was old but, honestly there are people still today believe marrage is forever. Back when I was born alot of my parents friends and my friends parents were divorced. So I mean it's not all bad these days people just seem to jump the gun alot when it comes to getting married and don't realize how much hard work goes into making it last. It's alot of work and most people aren't mentally prepared for being a couple they think nothing will change after the I do's but alot changes. I still think there is hope for love to last forever. And I'm recently divorced after 10 years, we split as friends, we jumped the gun and now I've learned from it.

Even now "everyone" doesn't think marriage is a joke and cheat. But divorce is obviously a lot more common than it used to be.

Actually 1977 isn't that long ago in this context, and there was a lot of divorce then also. If you go back to the 1930's or so, it was pretty uncommon, even maybe through the 1950's.

The year 1977 was the year that I had my last baby and I am not that old. Marriage is supposed to be forever no matter what happens in the couples lifes. Couples these days are too willing to just walk out and not work on their problems and then get a divorce. Sometimes a divorce is too easy to get.

Look, now you know its different-sooooo different.
Back then like the early 1900s, obviously there was no videos of rappers saying"***** sit on my lap and do whatever I want"-no, this is like a class for those immature people to take actions and try to immitate. and thats how they cheat! What does that have to do with your Q, a lot!!!.
more freedom means more things you can do, but if everyone does that then its OK if you do it too, like "Im not the first neither the last person to do it", people based on that sentence many times. so when they cheat they say "oh, its ok, the freaking man/woman didn't make me happy or wasn't the right one for me, so I'll guess I give myself other opportunity with some other person", these generations are born in freedom and before, they did not have freedom to say " you know what, I'm bored I want to cheat" It was the worst thing you can do, its your dignity as a person, its shameful, its trash, your actions are trash, people looked at you as the **** i **** on my time, because you're using people around you to make you feel different but your not trying to be different. And when you got married, for that time yes, it was indeed, the most beatiful thing to do, because you know you will spend the rest of your life with that person, all for the love you have.
Answer:the key to this Q of your is they had love,Love for the person you meet.

I remember 1977 well, and I'm not old. Marriage certainly wasn't a "joke", but even then there was much concern over the increasing rate of divorce. It was much the same then as now: people hoped marriage was forever, and people getting married figured THEY would be married forever, yet somehow lots of divorces were nevertheless occurring.

No one gets married expecting that they'll turn around and get divorced -- except maybe gold-digger chicks who marry old rich men.

Cheating has been going on for as long as there have been relationships. Actually, my son goes to visit his mom every other weekend. After about the 1950's ddivorce became more common. No one goes into marriage figuring they'll be part of the 58% divorce statistic. So, most people do not figure it to be a joke.

The idea of marriage changed after the late 60's as people became more open minded and self centered. The divorce rate climbed as people wanted to do their own thing in life, and being tied down to a household and family responsibilities did not seem like all it was said to be. The family I grew up with as a child still holds old values and we stay in touch as a family, but many of my brothers and sisters have had divorces and divorces are not nearly as glamorous as a wedding event. In the wake of broken and dysfunctional families our educational system has suffered, new no-fault laws were passed, divorce became wholesale and easier for the parents. Life became more difficult for children caught in the middle. Stability in marriage is getting harder to find, yet a stable marriage with commitment and responsibilities is a much more health lifestyle for all concerned. The divorce cycle continues to grow; if your parents divorced, it may be likely you will too.
