I know ground squirrels (chipmunks) hibernate. And this year there seemed to be more gray squirrels around. I saw them up until the first major snow storm. After the snow, I broke up some stale bread and put it outside for them, but it remained untouched - not even by birds. Or maybe they just don't like bread? Where's all the wildlife?

Hopefully finding more nutritious food than bread! :-)

Bread is not good for wildlife, especially birds. Their systems were never meant to digest the refined sugars and processed flour in bread, cakes, cookies, crackers and all the other "human" treats we are so fond of sharing with our feathered and furred friends.

Instead, they should be offered seeds and grains, suet, dried fruits, nuts and clean, fresh water. Provide this for the animals, and you'll see a lot more of them than you do now!

All the squirrels and birds have died off due to people feeding them foods that are not good for wildlife or humans.

Very probable the previous answers have merit however my poultry is robust and healthy eating table scraps every day of their lives. Whatever they leave wild birds 'pig out' on and their number doesn't seem to diminish.
