The above sounds good. You could couple this with the effect of disinfectant / antiseptic. (swab before and 5 minutes after applying)
Alternatively, a time line showing the stages in germination and growth of various seeds. Different students or groups could be given different varieties of seeds and map out and describe the changes that occur. You could get them to discuss the implications for agriculture.

Swab common areas around a school or household, and create a culture of bacteria that demonstrates the variety and the amount of different organisms present in areas that are assumed by people to be sanitary or commonplace.

Yuck, but Gilgamesh is right, that is a good one. I'll bet that there are more germs on desks in your classroom then there are on the toilets. Good luck! That is a great idea!
