I'll give you a little info to get started. Benedict's reagent is used to detect the amount of sugar in a solution. Here's how to make it:
(1) dissolve 100 g sodium carbonate and 173 g sodium citrate dihydrate in a final volume of 850 mL water.
(2) Slowly, with stirring, add a solution of 17.3 g copper sulfate pentahydrate in 100 mL of water.
(3) Bring the final volume to one liter.

Extract sugar from different gums by breaking the gum into the smallest pieces possible, weigh out equal amounts of gum, then place each type of gum in a separate test tube, and fill the test tubes with the same volume of water. To dissolve the sugars completely, let the gum sit overnight, or heat the test tubes in a beaker of water for 15 minutes at a temperature that is just under the boiling point.

The sugar test: When 1 mL of reagent is heated with 3-5 drops of a sugar solution in test tube placed in a boiling water bath, sugars will precipitate within five minutes. The color of the precipitate ranges from green to yellow to orange to brick-red depending on the amount of sugar in the sample. You will need to experiment with the number of drops to test to make sure you get a range of colors.
