It is possible to push start a car with an automatic transmission but it is not feasible to do so. You need to be able to get the vehicle to something around 30 mph to do it.

The way it is done is to put the car in neutral and then once at a decent speed, you put it into drive. In actuality, you could be in drive when you get to speed, but that might put undue stress on your transmission and all, so better play it safe.

As for why I can tell you this for sure, I have a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 2 fuel tanks which were put in by the previous owner. The gas fill through one tank so the gas gage is never totally right so I wind up running one tank dry and while driving I flip the switch to the other tank and the vehicle turns back over.

Why was it recommended A few years ago if you are going to tow a car with auto xmission you should remove the drive shaft because it will drive the xmision with possible damage ??

Nope. That only works if your car has a clutch which can couple the engine direct to the driveshaft during cranking. Automatics replace the clutch with a torque converter which is a big donut full of fluid that slips too much at engine cranking speeds.
