go to http://www.real.com and download the RealPlayer 11 Basic - it's free. this player can play almost every format and it can burn CDs (RealPlayer 11 Plus can also burn DVDs, but this player is not free).

this is the player i'm using already for many years (starting with version 8) and i hadn't to complain something till now.

a further advantage over the Windows Media Player is, it can play the formats .rm .rma .rmv (the real players native formats) what is used on many web sites that the Windows Player can't play.
in case the RealPlayer can't play a certain format you will be given automatically the proposition to download the needed codec and it's up to you to allow or deny.

ps.
be careful with this suggested codec packages, they can contain unwanted software (spyware and the like).

Click Start, then Programs, then Windows Media Player.

Put the movie in the CD player and sit back and enjoy.

Movies off the net require DivX or XviD codecs to be installed. XviD is preferable as it is "Open Source".

Google for the codec. Widely available.

While Windows Media Player will do your job fairly well, you can get powerful features by using PowerDVD or WinDVD softwares instead. They have add on functions like various equilizers. Note : they arent shareware though.

If you just need to get the DivX/XviD codecs you just need to download a codec package. Try K-lite codec.
