Afterall, there are only winners and losers in this world...and second place means you were the first one to lose...just using some logic I learned from my last question here...

Nibbles, didn't you just accuse me of trying to get out of what I justsaid? This question was inspired by you, because although you weren't creative enough to say it yourself, you parrotted another response that said this is all about not telling someone who didn't win, that they are a winner. hmmmmm.....

On the subject of 'everybody winning' that one answer states...he is correct....look at the NFL....you play to win...or your season ends this week. There is no playoffs, there is no Super Bowl chances.

If people took responsibility for their statements, there would be no PC...you said it...now stop weaseling out of what you said....

thanks, Nibbles. I couldn't have pointed out the hypocrisy better if I had made it up myself.

lol, and since we are on the football analogy, do you think it is fair that the college playoffs are controlled by those who get a vote, and not the actual records of the teams? Is that politically correct? This is all tongue incheek here, the point is, we use language many different ways, but the GOP only hates it when we limit their right to be racist, sexist, ethnicist, etc...NOT when it comes to sports or anything else.

No.

The problem with political correctness is that it assumes that you are responsible for how other people interpret things. If I call you short and you get offended by it, then it is my fault for not calling you vertically chalenged or some other, watered down variant of "short". However, if you would get offended at being called short, you would most likely be offended no matter how I phrased it so there is really little point in sugar coating.

On the matter of awards. It would entirely depend on the spirit in which the award was given. If I consider second to be a worthy accomplishment, then I would be correct in handing out an award. If you are the sort that would see anything other than first as a failure, then a silver medal would indeed be an insult. That however, is not my reponsibility. The medal was given to you in recognition of your accomplishments. If you wish to throw it away afterwards, that is your choice and is not my concern.

First, Second and Third place are not at odds here....

We're talking about the 'PC' world trying to making everyone a winner....and that's just wrong....if you don't study hard, work hard...guess what....YOU'RE NOT A WINNER...even if they give you a medal.

Teaching children that even if you don't try your hardest to win, we still acknowledge that you're a winner...IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!

Ask the non-elected politician next November if they're still a Winner!

Come on...common courtesy and politeness is one thing...but to have to bite your tongue because someone, somewhere, might be offended...that's just tooooo much!

EDIT...Nope...as usual someone can't read a response...I said...If people took responsibility for something they said...we wouldn't be at this point in time....you said it...now stop weaseling out of it...This was NOT a direct statement to you...the YOU in the statement was a general YOU...not YOU personally....And there you have it people...I took responsibility for my words....Unlike most who ASSUME!

SECOND EDIT - Alright....Apparently I'm fighting a losing battle here....fine....Here we go...I was born in this country but my grandparents came here as immigrants from Germany and Ireland...in the politically correct world...What does that make me? Face it...they want 'nice' names for everything in this world...And that is not always the case. Not everything can be painted a pretty pink to make it look pretty to hide its true nature. When you die...you die..You do NOT expire! There's no pretty way to rename death....it's death!

Aha, but the silver medal is worth more than the gold medal! It's solid silver, wheras the gold medal is gold plate.

As for whether it's politically incorrect I suppose it depends who you ask. Like anything there are extremes - there are people who don't see anything wrong with racial slurs, and people who think words like "snowman" and "police officer" shouldn't be used - and everyone in between.

If you're talking extreme PC here then no, you shouldn't reward people for being faster - you should celebrate that they can run at all. Or not, because then it discriminates against people who CAN'T run. Oh dear...

Used to be in this country that the second place finisher in presidential elections became vice president. So coming in second does have some value. Hey, at least silver means you came in first ahead of the guy holding the bronze.

Only ubercons and neocons who see the world only in black and white, right or wrong, my way or the highway would think like that. To most people the world if full of color or at least shades of gray and thus a recognition of second and third place are customary in most contests or games.

Often it transpires that the gold medal "winner" was drug assisted, I think 2nd best out of many competitors is an still an achievement.

The self-described political gold medal winners own judging critieria is highly questionable.

Most people don't see the world in such stark black and white terms as you do. Silver medals for second place are perfectly acceptable.

The world is not black and white.
There is many shades of gray and color.
Why should we care about politcal correctness?
Only the truth matters.
