My wife was up at 4 this morning feeding our 1 month old and saw black ants on the kitchen counter. Over the course of a few weeks they have gone from are bedroom bathroom to the hall bathroom and now into the kitchen. We live in NC and have had no rain for months so we thought they were looking for water. I sprayed and treated both bathrooms and they didn't return. Thing is my wife hates bugs and so she grabed the ant killer and sprayed the counters this morning and they died but then she was upset when she looked at the bottle and it said do not spray were food is prepread. "shes a little sleep deprived with the new baby and everything so she wasn't really thinking clearly" she cleaned the whole kitchen with 2 diffrent kinds of cleaner, bleach and clorox wipes so my question is, is it safe now to lay stuff on the counters since she cleaned them that much.

Poor lady!

You may want to go over that counter one last time with clear water. But I think it should be safe again.

Now- I don't blame your wife for hating ants. I do too, and until recently my little abode was Ant Hill Central. Someone else in the Answers forums was kind enough to share a recipe for baits that WILL kill ants. I tried it out and had absolutely no ant trouble for the rest of the year.

Here it is:
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons borax
3/4 cup water
Mix together in a small container until the sugar and borax dissolve. Dip pieces of bread crust in the solution and leave where you see the ants. The ants will eat it and carry it back to their nests.

And within a couple of days, you should have no more ants.

Good luck, and congratulations on the baby!

I don't put food directly on my countertops ever anyway, but if she has cleaned the surface that thoroughly, it should be fine. The message on the ant killer is so that the stupid people that do live around us don't spray the food they are about to eat that has an ant on it or dont' spray the kitchen counter and then proceed to prepare food where they just sprayed.

If you are worried about it, use a vinegar and water solution to kill the ants in the kitchen so that you don't run the risk of using harmful chemicals in there. There are also other organic bug sprays that may be safer to use with the baby in the house.

The counter is fine if she cleaned it that well. I have done that too - new babies can do that to a person.

Do not worry. It is a dummy label warning. As long as she cleaned it she is fine. Most people do not even clean that thoroghly.
