a circle, i know it sounds silly but i really need to know, my math teacher told me to find out coz that is what they (classmates) learnt when i was away with a cold, please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!

A circle has that name because it is circular.
c.1305, from O.Fr. cercle, from L. circulus "small ring," dim. of circus (q.v.). Replaced O.E. trendel and hring. Meaning "group of persons surrounding a center of interest" is from 1714; that of "coterie" is from 1646; dim. form circlet is from 1481. The verb is from c.1374.

Circle comes from the Latin word circus.The traditional shape of roofless eclosures used for Roman races was circular or oblong ,therefore the word was used to described the shape as well
