I have family and friends in the USA so visit often.
The best thing I ever did was hire a car and just drive. Saw a lot in just 10 days and stayed in mid-range motels.
Places I liked best were Arizona Meteor Crater and Painted Desert (just like WOW!!!!), a couple of nights in Flagstaff as my DH is an astonomer and had a booking at the university observatory there. Then we went to the Grand Canyon ( a bit touristy but mind blowing). Lake Mead and Hoover Dam were okay, Las Vegas wasn't my scene at all - too busy and I don't gamble. Into Utah and took a look at a few Mormon places. The Dinosaur National Park was amazing and worth a visit. We stayed in a little town called Price and the museum there has dino stuff that would put city museums to shame. We went back to Denver through the Eisenhower tunnel.
A previous trip I went to Salt Lake City and would like to go back.
Denver is okay - a bit of a cow town though. I love The Rockies in Colorado. Buffalo Bill's grave is a nice place to visit as well. No too touristy and great views.
My daughter has been to Seatle and loved it.
I quite liked Miami for a couple of days but woldn't want to stay longer.
I hated New York.

Each state has something great to offer. But many people are curious about California and Hollywood. You might enjoy seeing the studios . As for New York... I was there for four days and had the time of my life. There was so much to do and so many places to go, I was getting about 4 hours sleep a day. Maybe you were just too young then to go to the hot spots. Las Vegas Nevada is fun, and you can take a trip from there to the Grand Canyon... which is awesome ! Niagra Falls will take your breath away. The ski skopes in Colorado are super, if you dont mind all the rich Texans dripping with oil or cattle money. And... everyone should see Hawaii and the black sand beaches!!! Go online, check it all out, and book a flight.

Florida is quite good but really just a tourist trap. I think I'd prefer the city - New York. Maybe you'd prefer New York now you're older? Though remember while you're legally an adult in the UK at 18 you're not over there so may be a different holiday you could have or want. :)

Depends on your interests. If you are into history, then Washington DC and the various museums there are good.
If you're into natural places, then Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, are amazing.
America is very much a buffet of differences. Every region is unique. My UK friends seem to all really enjoy Florida (Orlando area).

If you didn't like new york, then you defiantly wont like Florida, las vagas, and especially California, i suggest trying some of the great wonders our country has to offer, like the grand canyon in Arizona, yellow stone national park and some other natural wonders, America has allot of them, you may even want to try Canada.

It really depends on what you are interested in. Washington D.C. has a lot to offer, especially the Smithsonian Museums. I'm not sure if it would be less interesting for someone that is not from the U.S.
Las Vegas is really cool, even if you are underage. There are so many unique sites there. Plus you can also get to the Grand Canyon while you are there.

Each state has its' own unique appeal, and peoples' opinions for going to that area, differ on their interests.
Why don't you and your friend, make a list of what you'd like to see, do, who you'd like to meet, what you'd like to get out of your trip, ect, and from there, see which cities provide that sort of entertainment/sightseeing/hospitality best for you and find a place/town/city to go to there.
For example; you both like the outdoors, cold weather, mountains, and don't mind rain/snow? Try Portland, Oregon or somewhere in the Washington state area. Theres' tons of outdoor activities to get your adreneline pumping, as well as lots of more laid-back areas in the town for you to relax in, and meet new people and also enjoy the green mountain scenery.
Whatever your interests, make a list, find the places that best suites you and go there. Have fun!

You should come to Chicago in the summer-time.
Then you can enjoy the lake, Navy Pier, catch a Cubs game.
You can travel up to Wisc and check out Summer Fest.

Pick one of the many National Parks that we have to offer.
My personal favorite is Yellowstone National Park.
In the U.S., a national park is protected from development and pollution. You get to see the wildlife and nature up close, in its natural habitat, unspoiled (for the most part) by humans.
If you choose Yellowstone, you could see geysers like Old Faithful. It spews hot, boiling water hundreds of feet into the air on schedule. Nature does it. . . . man has nothing to do with it. You can take a drive across the park and see elk, buffalo, deer, wolves and bears up close from the safety of your car. You can take one of the many hiking trails to different attractions like the paint pots (hot springs with natural minerals in them. . . . looks like a painter's pallet and is many different colors) or to one of the many solitary lakes carved out by glaciers. Yellowstone has its own "Grand Canyon" which is beautiful. The waterfalls are all gorgeous and all different from each other. You could spend a week in the park and not see it all.
There are other National Parks, each with its own unique, beautiful features. Google U.S. National Parks and get a list to find one that appeals to you.

America is too big to give a single best place to visit. There are many places so far apart that they cannot be taken in in a single visit. And it depends what your tastes and interests are, whether for natural wonders or history.
