It's a paid holiday up here just like Christmas.

It comes from england originally. I think it was meant to give leftovers to the poor the day after christmas, this is going back years obviously.

Here, it sometimes means wild crowds full of sharp elbows at local sales. But a century or two ago, it used to be the day on which the poor or lower-rung employees were given boxes of Christmas gifts or other end-of-year type of donations.
