Have to agree and say the most common would be PARENT.

Other words that could fit, given the context (courtesy of a thesaurus):
caretaker, guardian, custodian, creator, originator...

I like the answer if they have teenagers then they are STUPID. You can add clueless to that too.

A mother or a father is 'parent'. A mother and father is 'parents'. If one represents both, then it's a single parent but would probably be simply called 'parent'.
