I hope everyone gets their "Greatest rocker/band/song/lyrics" questions answered today but my question is a little deeper:

What is your favorite concept album and what was the concept?

My favorite is probably "The Who Sell Out" by The Who, which is a sarcastic look at commercialism.

Also, "Wish You Were Here" by Floyd is a no-brainer, which deals with the departure of Syd Barrett.

Mornin Steve...
My favorite concept album is, and always has been
Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon"
Because to Me it is a work of sheer unparalleled musical genius for several reasons
The themes it deals with are deep and complex. Abandonment, loneliness, desperation, and ultimately insanity.
Food for pretty deep thought there.
The quality and richness of each individual song on the album. Something that you don't find in a lot of "concept" albums. the depths of their commitment to, and interest in the material really comes through.
And , to Me any band that can make an album that is thoroughly linked together from first track to last while being a gorgeous sonic masterpiece at the same time is deserving of My respect and admiration.
That's why Dark Side is the best concept album ever made....To Me

The Who Sell Out is a great choice! I'm not really keen on most concept albums, although I enjoy Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull and some others who have produced concept albums.
Aqualung is a solid album, but I think I'll go with Joe's Garage from Frank Zappa. I think the reasons are very similar to yours with The Who, a sarcastic look at being a "rock star".

I wouldn't say it's the best, but my favorite would be Grandaddy's "The Sophtware Slump." It's the story of these guys (I suppose they would have to be engineers) who build a robot that is a big breakthrough. As they move forward and create new things they kind of leave the robot behind and the robot, it sounds silly but it's done in a very tasteful and effective way, falls into a deep lonely depression and drinks itself to death. The story is approached entirely in one song, with a supplement later in the album, but there is a clear concept vibe to the record. The themes of disparity and loneliness are very effectively portrayed throughout it, but not in a silly way. It is a really great and under known record.

Well, I particularly like Pink Floyd's 'WYWH' & 'DSotM', but I'd go with this one :~

Jethro Tull ~ 'War Child'
It was a re-working of their previous concept album 'A Passion Play', and was intended to be the soundtrack to a film. If I remember correctly, the 'concept' was that a young, pregnant ballet dancer dies in an accident, and then Heaven and Hell fight over her soul.

Ones that come to mind would be;
Desparado - Eagles (Life and times of Bill Doolin + Bill Dalton, outlaws)
Paradise Theatre - Styx (Based on band members childhood memories, and all the memories associated with, a venue which was demolished, yet was where they first gained inspiration to become performers)
Third Stage - Boston (Deals with the bands members life journey through broken trust, love and healing presented within a spacey kinda outerworldly theme)

I wouldn't classify myself as a "Thinker" but heres my pick.

I'll go with another Pink Floyd album - Animals:
which was inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm:
Dogs represent business leaders,
Pigs represent political/religious leaders,
Sheep represent people who blindly follow the above.
