I have not seen 'No Country for Old Men' or 'The Departed'. I've heard that they are both very good. In my opinion, the last 2 great movies were made in the same year, 1994, 'Shawshank' and 'Gump'.

'Babe' was great, but I'm 12 at the movies, so my opinion does not count. TD

There are so few great movies in my lifetime. Most movies that I felt were great did not have staying power after 20 years. To me a great movie doesn't only move me when I see it, but I can watch it a decade later and it still resonates.

Here are some that meet that criteria:

Murder by Death

Shawshank Redemption (I agree with you--still excellent).

(Forest Gump was excellent when I saw it, but I don't expect it to age well--his run across America part will probably date the movie to the level of a good John Cussack movie).

(Same with Ghostbusters hilarious but did not age well).

Braveheart--just plain excellent.

The Sixth Sense--groundbreaking.

Good Will Hunting

All four Lord of the Rings movies

Edit: Reenie you are thinking about Rainman

Edit again: Yeah I liked Shakespeare in Love too, I also was partial to Boyz in the Hood (though I hated all the copycat movies that came out).

The best movie since Disney's Renaissance is in my opinion Frozen. If you're counting old Disney animated films then there're LOADS: The lion king, Bambi, Pinocchio, ... Recent live action Disney films and TV series drove me to watch Dreamworks more and more though. They're absolutely fantastic. Ingenious! !!
