I have P4 2.8 GHz in a case with a fan on the side and 4 fans in the front. How should I configure the direction of the air flow through the case for the most effecient cooling? In through the side, out through the front or vice versa?

When I got the computer, it only had the side fan. It had a place for 4 fans in the front. I put the other fans in because they were right in front of the hard drives.

in through the front and out of the back/side is the usual airflow, this is because heat rises so it takes cold air from the bottom of the front and puts it out the top of the back/side (and rarely out of the very top of the case), the case you have must be strange to have 4 fans on the front and only 1 on the side + none on the back.

Well, with the side and front fans, it sounds like that is as efficient as your going to get.
If you're really worried about heat, the BEST place to collect heat is at the top of the machine (where most of it is trapped).
If you're REALLY REALLY worried about heat, I've even heard of some neat water-cooled systems. But it doesn't sound like you want to spend that much money on ventilation.
