My grandmother is in a nursing home in Richmond, Va. I took a visit to her on Christmas day and was informed that if she was to have a bowl movement that they down provide diapers for the folks to wear they have a pad underneath them for bowl movement purposes and a nurse is to check in very frequently to make sure no bowl movements or accidents have taken place and if they have to get her cleaned up and a fresh pad put down. But in the two hours I was there with her she complained of pain because she was holding her bowl movement and was afraid to release it. She would not tell me why she was so afraid. On top of this in the two hours I was there only one nurse stepped in (<--keyword) but only to drop off food for the other older lady in the same room. This HAS to be very very wrong and unlawful!! Am I correct or are they aloud to run things this way? It seems to me if she sits in her bowl for that amount of time it is going to cause bad infection. Am I right? Thank you in advance.

Actually, I really wish I could just take her home with me. I would feel so much better. It's horrible to see a grown woman in pain because she is afraid to use the rest room because she fears having to sit in it for hours at a time! I can't believe this. But no, although she is at a nursing home she is only there for rehabilitation purposes due to a stroke she had three weeks ago...this is so sad and horrible. I can't believe it.

I would also like to ask. Let's say the nurse DOES check in every 30 minutes to every hour is it still okay that they only provide pads underneath her in the event she has a bowl? Considering she might still have to sit in it for 30 minutes to an hour?

find a better home. yes, you are right - sitting in it can cause an infection and break down of skin - decubitus ulcers. very nasty and harmful to her health. they are not all like that - can't she stay with you at home so you can help her? there are adult day cares for her if everyone will be gone during the day - just drop her off like you would a child and they can make sure she is safe. it is a lot cheaper than the nursing home and you know you will take care of her.

Every state has laws concerning nursing homes and elder care. I would call and report this nursing facility right away. That could be considered abuse and neglect....sounds to me like they are trying to make things easier for themselves, and not their residents.

Virginia Department of Social Services...1-888-832-3858 or 1-804-371-0896

check out these websites....they can probably answer your questions:
www.wilkesmchugh.com/nursing_home_abuse_consumer_VA.html

www.lawyersva.com/nursing_home_abuse.asp or call them
1-800-703-0109 Epperly and Follis PC...these are both law office in your area.....

I searched this form you, I would call and fill a complaint with the VA dep of Social Services......this is very important, before someone dies in that facility.
