If it is heavy in which you are changing one or more pads or tampons in an hour or less, you will need to see a doctor immediately as this is considered excessive bleeding and can lead to anemia. Typically 10 or more days of bleeding warrants a visit to see your doctor. Period abnormalities can be due to many things including stress, weight gain/loss, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, infection, illness, medications, polyp, cyst, amongst other reasons. The only way to know for sure exactly what is going on is to see your doctor for an exam and testing. If your doctor suspects a hormonal imbalance, a simple blood test will show this.

The first think I would say is to make an appointment to be seen by a Dr.
There are a couple of reasons this could happen..
Your hormones are out of control. It is normal for this type of thing to happen. It can be regulated with some hormone treatment, including the pill.
Have you changed your diet, been sick, stressed? These are all reasons a lengthened period could happen.
Also it could maybe be a blood clot. I am not a doctor, but I want to be sure you understand there is a chance it needs the attention of a doctor,O.K.
You should let a parent know what is going on too. Your mom or Aunt could of experienced the same thing, and would be understanding of your concerns.
If you cannot get to a Dr. clinic there are many free clinics you could find..ask a pharmacist.

Sometimes periods can be irregular, especially in the beginning. Was this your first period? Other factors can be your weight or stress. If you are over weight or under weight, periods can become irregular or even stop completely. If you have been sexually active, be honest about it. You could be pregnant.
The best advice is to see you doctor and tell him or her about your concerns. If you are uncomfortable seeing a male doctor, ask your mother to take you to see a female doctor or nurse practioner. You will find a good friend to confide in that way.
Good luck to you!

If your period started and hasn't stopped, you need to go to the gynecologist. It is probably simply your body getting regulated, but if it goes on so long, you can get anemic so you should get checked out to make sure something else isn't a factor and you have no other health issues causing this. They can put you on a low dose pill that will help you get regular if necessary.

You are seventeen and in a committed relationship. I think it's appropriate for you to experiment with sexuality and I applaud your decision to prevent a pregnancy. It IS important that you use a condom. I think your mom is worried that you won't use condoms because the pill will make you feel invincible. There is no reason you need to be on the pill when your boyfriend can just use condoms. When used correctly, they are very effective at preventing both pregnancy and STDs.

You seriously need to go to the Dr. Have you even been for this problem? Go to an OBGYN not a family practioner. If you are on birthcontrol some kinds can make you have a period like that. But you could have a medical problem. If its a heavy flow you REALLY need to see a doctor.

Go see a doctor. Periods can be irregular and unpredictable for some people. The doctor can check that there isn't a problem, and give you birth control to regulate and control your periods. Good luck.

GO TO AN OBSTETRICIAN!
This is NOT normal. You need to be seen by a doctor, not misdiagnosed by the great unwashed at Yahoo Answers.
I will not attempt to say what may be wrong with you, but I do want you to know that bleeding that long will make you anemic and more likely to get sick and stay sick because of your being anemic.

Emma, go to the doctor, that's not right, not at your age, you could be becoming anaemic loosing all that blood.
I lost alot of blood for weeks and weeks after having each of my children, i was given tablets to stop the bleeding for 1, the other stopped eventually, and the third i went into hospital to have a D+C, i know it makes you feel very low and very tired, so please go to the doctors soon.
Good luck.
