I just bought a sewing pattern from Simplicity, and I've worked with a pattern before, but it only showed one way to place the pattern on fabric. In this pattern it showed 4 different ways to place the pattern. And I know that with some patterns you can make different things (ex. 6 different shirts in one pattern), but on mine, pattern D came with D1, D2, D3, D4. How do I know which pattern to pick?

Different layouts are usually for different types and sizes of fabrics such as 44/45" or 60", or with or without nap... Also, directional fabrics (ie. stripes) or repeating designs (assuming you want to match them up) use more fabric than solids or random prints because you have to be fussy with the layout. You will choose the layout that best matches your fabric width and type. Hope this helps!

I agree with Cartman- choose the fabric width and nap (if there is a nap) that matches what you have.

Is there a section on the instructions that shows you little drawings and a list of all the pieces? It sounds like D1, 2, 3 et cetera are all different pieces for the same shirt, so you would use them all. Is one a sleeve, one a front, one a cuff, and so on?

The suggested layouts are just that: suggested. Sometimes, they really aren't helpful. On each pattern piece, there will be an arrow showing the grain of the fabric -- unless it doesn't matter for that pattern piece, of course. As long as you align this correctly, and follow all instructions on each piece (cut one, cut two, cut one on fold, etc) you should be fine. If your fabric has a print or design or other 'nap' on it, be sure this lines up correctly, too. I never use the printed layouts because they tend to waste fabric.
