I desperately need some answers!! i am pregnant with my first. at 30 weeks i started going into preterm labor. the drs gave me the terb shot and sent me home, which didnt work bc i was back the very next day. that day in the hospital i was given 2 shots of terb, and a shot of steroids... and i was to go back to the hospital the next day for my steroid shot again. my contractions still did not stop so they put me on procardia. in the end i was taken off both the terb and procardia because of bad side effects they were giving me. now i am on no drugs to stop labor. i am now 34 weeks and 5 days, and having contractions every 3 minutes. i am 50% and 1-2cm as of two days ago.... yet when i go into labor and delivery, they STILL try to stop my contractions.. my question is WHY!?!?! ive had the steroids! and my contractions always start up again... why not deliver me?! someone please help...
thank you!

I went into labor myself at 36 weeks and was ready and got pist cause they stopped it. They told me that they would rather me carry the baby 4 as long as I could so the lungs can fully develop and the longer you carry the baby to full term then the better change of their little lungs and other organs to develop for them. It gets agrivating I know huh but it (sorry not sure if it's a girl or boy) will be here before u know it and realize how fast it went.......

Steriods are the only thing they can do to give a premature baby a chance at survival out of the womb. Its not always going to work, and in most cases is doesnt, but its all they can do.

They dont want to deliver you until you are full term, thats why they keep stopping it. Your body for whatever reason is trying to expel an underdeveloped baby, but your baby is not ready to survive or thrive outside your womb on its own. It simply cant do it well.

When your baby's development is satisfactory they will deliver you, until then the goal is to provide the best they can for the baby, and it should be your goal too.

Just try to stay down and relax, you're really close to being done. They might try to get you to 37 weeks, but chances are in a few days they'll deliver you.

They may try to keep you out of delivery til the 37 weeks mark, because thats when the baby is considered full-term. They might also not want to try to deliver til you're more effaced and dialated.

But I don't see why they are stopping you if they can't stop the contractions.

do you have an o.b.? you should be talking to him/her about this and he/she should be communicating with the hospital when you go in. the deal is, 35 weeks is still early and at that point, i do believe the standard practice is to still try to stop labor. they probably want you to continue for a couple more weeks. every day your baby spends still in you is good when we're talking prematurity.

They probably fear that your babys lungs are still not mature enough. I agree with you though after 34 weeks, babys tend to be fine after a very short NICU stay. I would ask my doctor if I were you. AND GOOD LUCK!

The longer you carry the baby, the more the lungs are developed. I have heard that you want to carry to at least 37 weeks if you can. So, my guess is that they are trying to give your baby time.
Good Luck.
