Can a clown knife fish and a betta (male or female) ever go together?

I do plan on separating the clown knife later when it grows bigger.

All around bad idea. If the Betta even looks like it will fit in the Knife fish's mouth the Knife will try to eat the Betta. So you will have a dead Betta even it the Knife can't actually eat it.
