You need to confront this situation directly by taking it to your company's Owner and asking him or her to provide an explanation for the GM's behavior or, if he/she is unaware of what is going on, to investigate the GM's secret meetings, which certainly appear to have had the effect of undermining your authority in the company, and what the GM's purpose is in doing so.
Be prepared for the worst. It may be that the GM and Owner are working together, and that they want you to leave. (Unless your department is doing poorly under your leadership, then I doubt that is the case.) But just keep this in mind. Even if the GM is subverting your authority all on his own, if he has managed to damage your authority and influence sufficiently the Owner may decide that he/she is better off finding a new department head than trying to rehabilitate you. So I would not wait long to confront this issue.
Lastly, you should establish the facts to the best of your ability to do so. you should talk to those people in your department who you trust to tell you the whole truth. You should type out a very factual narrative, and, if you think it appropriate, you should consult your an employment lawyer before meeting with the Owner. He or she may have a better idea on how to handle this situation with a view to getting it resolved in your favor.
Good luck.

It sounds like he is trying to get rid of you. This could be for any number of reasons that are not really important now.
You could either confront the GM (in a very professional, yet direct) manner, go behind his back and have a side conversation with the owner about this or you could simply start looking for another job.
I don't recommend that you ignore the problem. Nothing good will ever come of that.

you have to stand up to this as it is not acceptable behavior. Maybe you can just walk into every meeting he holds and he cannot ask you to leave. Confront him. Call a joint meeting with the owner and ask him to set responsibilities.
Else first take the easy approach - talk to him, and ask him if he has a problem with your work, etc etc - soften him and pop the question about your authotiry being undermined because of his meetings. Tell him how it is affecting your work and that you always thought highly of him and wanted his advice and that he is a role model etc ... Get him to be comfortable that you are not out to get him out of his seat. Play the same game and take him along.
The game is politics and you will land up with a truce and then look for the fastest way to get him out of the company ! Go kill him because he will not rest until he has you out of the place and he has his lackey in your seat.

3 approaches:
1. Continue to gain the confidence of your subordinates, your manager and also the owner.
2. SKIP level - Have a meeting with the owner and lay out the facts with DATA points and let him deal the situation without revealing the details about this skip.
3. ONE on ONE - Have a one on one discussion with your manager and try and understand the reasons for this behaviour. Watch out not to make it a unfriendly discussion as it might lead to more serious problems. Try and negotiate for a WIN-WIN situation.

Your boss sounds like he's threatened by you. Unfortunately his fear could spark a political battle in the workplace.
Given the fact that you have established a good rapport with the owner, your boss is putting himself at risk with his actions. If you are able to prove that he's inciting your employees to rebellion, the owner might well fire your boss.
Just be carefull...office politics can be just as treacherous as war and have the same devastating results.

confront the GM about it.
Ask him why you aren't in on the meetings, request a copy of the agenda because you want to stay up to date on the information your workers are receiving.
If that doesn't work, then go to the owner.
Or prohibit unauthorized meetings of those in your department, without your knowledge.
BUT you don't seem like much of a leader to me if you have to ask what to do in this situation. Be strong.

Discuss the problem with the owner, but be careful as to whose side he will take. You may find yourself more expendable than the GM.
I would be prepared to move on.
