Prague, Arles, Annecy, Venice, Munich.
If you like art, you also have to see the van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. And the Louvre is incredible: Veronese's Wedding at Cana and all those great Delacroix paintings.

In a year you can cover Europe pretty well if you can spend all your time traveling, less well if you also have to work.
If you can afford it, Norway.
French, west coast, (Brittany, Normandy.)
I should say most of France is worth visiting.
Mountains, all of them are beautiful, but my flat Dutch countryside is also worth seeing. The towns are the most visited, but the country and villages are also different from most other places.
Also plan to go to eastern Europe, my sister in law is from Slovakia, so I hear a lot about that area, my brother and she go there often, but most holiday stories I heard of the former communist area are good. Do not expect the most modern campsites or hotels, try to meet the locals and stay in the smaller places if you can.
Also good for you budget, as you can still eat for about a fifth of what it would cost in Ireland or the Netherlands.

Prague. It is a smaller town, very nice people and much less expensive than most large Euro cities. I also recommend Gmunden, Austria. It is a HUGE lake in the Austrian Alps. Sooo beautiful.
I go to Prague every year as I have family there and I get lonely for it after 6 months of being back in the USA.

If you are in Italy, just take a short trip to Malta. This is a very small island in the mediterranean, just below sicily. Here one can find the oldest arceological temples in the world, cities surrounded with bastions buildt 500 years ago by the order of St.John, experience wonderful diving and a sunny weather 10months a year.

This will sound unusual but you will be surprised how SERBIA is great. It is not so comercialized as some other countries but still there are nice and cheap hostels, ways to get wherever you want, great night life and excellent food!! The only thing is that at this period it's cold, but if you love romantic scenes like seing cities under snow and fancy ski centers, this is the place for you.
Avoid? I believe that in every plaec you can finnd something ineresting, but if you want to back in one peace, stay away from Albania!

Prague... Go in the winter time before Christmas or in the spring, when everything is green and air smells nicely.
Prague is mysterious, beautiful and every stone in the Old city is telling you the story of passed centuries...
