The answer depends on if you deleted the files or formatted the hard drive. There are utilities that will "undelete" files if they have not been overwritten. When you delete files you only change the first letter of the name, so an undelete utility should be able to get them back as long as you known what the name was supposed to be. If they were just backup files, recopy them from the primary hard drive.

If you still have the files on the main drive, ( you did say these were back up files) then just do a new back up to the external drive, and you will have a good working back up.

IF what you meant to say was old files that you had removed from you hard drive and wanted to keep, then the data recovery service is all you have available. It will be expensive to use, and may or may not work, depending on what you have done since the accidental deletion.

good luck.

Google "data recovery" and check out some of the options. You will have to pay per gig recovered, and can specify which data you want to recover.
