If you are from a warm place and go to a cold place, bring all the warm gear that you can.
Better be warm and a little odd than fashionable with pneumonia.
Also bring jeans for city use and when it is less cold if you have the space.

I have seen many people wearing mountain gear for everyday use in the mountain areas, but as I am not from Scotland, I am not sure how widespread this is.

Hiya! Greetings from Glasgow, Scotland :)

I don't think ppl are going to bat an eyelid if you walk around in walking gear.. many ppl do when the weather gets bad. Many natives do like to pretend its warm all year around and walk around in Tshirts even in midwinter but similarily there are a lot of foreign exchange students here in Glasgow and you can imagine that those from Africa and other warmer climates do dress accordingly. If you want to eat out, do bring smart shirt and trousers with you :)
