If your computer is connected to the cable modem, then you may be connected to the Internet.

If you were on any websites and then exited out of them, perhaps you were downloading something?

Anyway, I'd suggest that you try running an antivirus scan as well as a spyware scan if you didn't authorize this download or don't really know anything about it.

Spyware.

You are always "logged on" to the internet on a broadband connection.

Get a router or a software firewall, make sure your OS is fully updated, and get some anti-virus protection with full internet security such as Norton IS or 360.

Get spy-bot then run it delete everything it finds.switch off pc,unplug internet,reboot in safe mode ,run all your anti malware programs, reboot,still with no inter net,leave running for afew minutes,then shut down.plug in internet boot up &you should be allright.some malware is only troggerd by your internet connection,so you should have broken that connection by doing as said .good luck.
