I think there must be a series of keys to re-start the keyboard but I can't remember. I don't know what keys I hit, or if I did, to cause the keyboard to "lock up" so they are not recognized.

Uh, you're logged in and you typed this question. Did you use another computer?

Okay, then.

You probably have a chunk of food in it, even though the keyboard might not be jammed. This prevents the key from pressing the circuits that sends the data to the computer that tells it what to display on the screen.

You might have also spilled some water. This usually scrambles the circuitry to the point it performs improperly or cannot perform.

My advice to you is to get another keyboard. This is usually more economic than repairing it. If it is a laptop keyboard, you have two options:

1. Get a second keyboard (note that typing on a secondary keyboard is usually faster than typing on the one that came with your laptop).

2. Get you laptop keyboard repaired. This would cost more than a secondary keyboard, but if you're on-the-go and need to preserve your batterly life, then this is your best option. Also note that there is no keyboard small enough to fit in your pocket.

on my computer when that happens I hold the shift key down for about 10 seconds and then it locks. A pop up then appears and it tells you how to unlock your keyboard.

Perhaps it's your keyboard? Do you have another keyboard that you can use to see if your keyboard is broken or something like that?
