Well, to be fair to others who really like Metallica's music, maybe he is.
Then again, there are a lot of rockers throughout the 20th century who have (continually) changed and shaped rock music as we have known it.
Being "great" -- especially in music -- is more of a subjective thing, actually.
You see, there's Jimi Hendrix who made so many great tunes with this guitar in the late 60s to the 70s that has influenced a lot of rock stars later on.
Then there's Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Both are still guitarists but a lot of other rockers have been influenced by them. If I'm not mistaken, Kirk Hammet, the guitarist of Metallica, learned from Joe Satriani.
If you like bands, then there's Led Zeppelin. The guitar solo of the song Stairway to Heaven, which was done by Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page, was --- no, is --- a classic.
Then there is Pink Floyd, Rush, the Rolling Stones; there's David Lee Roth of Van Halen, Trent Reznor of Nine-inch Nails, Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, Jim Morrison of The Doors... and the choices could go on and on and on. :-)
There are a whole lot of rock musicians and, one way or another, they have influenced each other to create and shape rock music.
And, finally, they have influenced those who listen to rock music.

*****, PLEASE.
He's not even on the top 25 list. "Rocker" is an Old-School Term from the 50's, in the Rock-A-Billy and/or Rock and Roll category. Greased back hair and black leather, Hot Rods and Motorcycles. The term "Rocker" is as much about style and swagger as it is about your chops and reverb. Back in the Mid-60's in Great Britain there were huge Gang Wars between the Mods and the Rockers, the Teddy Boys, or "Teds" as they were also known.
But for the record: The greatest Rocker of the 50's was probably either the late, great Eddie Cochran, or the late, great Buddy Holly, honorable mention to the late, great Gene Vincent, these three make up the Holy Trinity of 50's Rockabilly. Some people would disagree and insist on Carl Perkins or the late Elvis Presley.
The greatest Rocker of the 60's was probably the late Dick Dale, honorable mention to the late Link Wray.
The greatest Rocker of the 70's was probably the late Cub Koda although Bryan Gregory and Kid Congo Powers should be mentioned for their efforts in The Cramps.
The greatest Rocker of the 80's was probably Brian Seltzer of the Stray Cats, although Stevie Ray Vaughn comes very close indeed. George Thorogood should also be mentioned.
In the 90's, very few people had chops like Gary Hoey...
Frankly, I'm still waiting for someone of equal talent to the names I've already mentioned to surface in this decade.
Look, if you haven't heard some of these guys, do yourself a favor, do an Internet Search on Google and hear some of the finest music made in the last 50 years.

James Hetfield is more of a Rocker/Recliner in the LazyBoy tradition. His hand-made quilted rails (that are tightly fastened to the sturdy, American Made fiber-compressed framework) do stand up under the heavy duty payload one would expect of a Rocker, but I definitely think could even be thrown into the "Sofa" category. Greatest Rocker in History? Probably those ones out in front of Cracker Barrel...

James Hetfield is one of the greats in rhthym guitar playing. But riffs, melodies and downright rocking dude, I would vote for Dave Mustaine for a rocker that is still alive. He still rocks until now. James lost his touch after Cliff Burton died.
The ultimate rocker, living or dead, I would vote for Cliff Burton. He is not only a rocker, he is a rager! Coolest guy that ever lived!

Hetfield is so overrated it's almost funny. I love Metallica, one of my favorite bands, but I hate when ignorant people claim that he is a guitar god. He's not. You want the greatest rocker of all time, look up Jimmy Page.

doesnt metallica technically 'thrash', not 'rock'?
that being said: the greatest rocker is (in my opinion) paul rodgers from bad company, because he just plain effing rocks.
and on the thrash front: dave mustaine rocks SO much harder than hetfield.
