My son bought me a telescope for Christmas! Its a Tasco 60mm I can see its going to be a whole new discipline. I has taken me 2 hours to unpack it and set it up and am so looking forward to using it . What I want to know is where do I keep it when not in use. Obviously not outside but the floor area for inside the house is quite big. Do you dismantle it? At the minute I am thinking guest bedroom! I am frightened of it being knocked over. Should I collapse the legs and take the telescope from the stand?

I live in Spain. Temp at the moment is about 50 degrees during the day. I could turn the heating off to the guest bedroom... perhaps that would help.

Congratulations on your new telescope!
I remember you saying that's what you thought was under the tree!
For all the years I've used a telescope, I've left them set up, (except for my largest one... It's just too heavy and bulky to move around as a single unit).
I store my telescopes outside in a locked storage shed, to keep the thermal stabilization time down to a minimum.
The eyepieces are stored in a seperate, dust- proof, foam lined case. Lens caps for your telescope are a must! Keep your optics clean.
All controllers and battery packs, cameras, widgets and doodads are stored inside in their own cases.
Good luck, and have fun with your new 'toy'!

I'm not sure where you live but if it's cold out like it is where I live, you might want to consider storing it outside. For years I had a shed with a lock and stored mine there.

Moving your telescope from a warm house to a cold outside will cause the normal contractions - to use the telescope to its best advantage, this process should be complete.

Good luck!

Do you have young children that might knock it over while its in the guest room? If not, I would suggest that you put it on your tripod and leave it set up so you can readily use it again.

Or you could close the guest room door and lock it. :)

I always leave mine fully assembled and store it in an extra room, Make certian that you cover the lenses and both ends of it to keep dust particles out,

Happy Holidays and Happy viewing;
