How old are you?
If you're young, do you want to be old (well older)?
If you're old, do you want to be young again?

I'm 13 and I want to be 18 so that I can do what I want and drive.

I am 47 and most days can't quite believe that I am so old!!!

I and my friends from high school (yes we are still friends and in touch with each other) still remember how it was when we were teenagers and we couldn't wait to be older so we could drive and earn our own money, buy our own things and most importantly not have someone (our parents namely) telling us what to do.

Well let me tell you when we first started having all those freedoms when we were eighteen and older we found out that we still were being told what to do. This time it was our university lecturers or our employers or our landlords, boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives etc etc.

So this is what I know now. That you absolutely should never, I repeat never be in in any hurry at thirteen to be older. This is, if you can make it (and only you can by simply changing your way of thinking) the wonder years of your life. You are learning something new every day. Please don't be too proud to listen to what older people tell you. In most cases they just don't want you to make the same mistakes they did. It's what you would do for anyone younger than yourself - wouldn't you?

I do remember being thirteen and I was mostly miserable. The ugly fairy hit me with a combination of hormonal shifts that saw me get, acne - big time, greasy hair (I'm blonde), and I stopped growing and got fat. In one year I went from okay looking to horrible. This is my recollection. My parents would have a different one as well as my friends. My point is I want you to know that I do know how you are feeling. I still remember having some fun times and making new friends and you know what was the best thing - life got better each year.

I hope this helps you. Remember to laugh and be kind because you are not the only one going through the terrible thirteens!!!

Well, youth is generally regarded as a time of great physical vitality and abject cluelessness.

Most older people wish their bodies could keep the physical vitality & appearence of youth, but few wish to repeat the process of getting a clue.

At 13 you live in the Garden of Eden. Your needs are provided, but you must submit to the will of God (aka parents)
One day, around the time you want to accept fruit form the opposite sex, you will have to leave the garden.

The good news is you won't have to obey God anymore.
The bad news is you'll have to pay for the fruit.

So I'm glad you want to grow up, but enjoy that garden while you can.

Hi there,
well I am 55 years old, and when you get this age you think about lots of things you did in your life, the people you loved, and friends you sometimes lose touch with, or people or places you want to visit.
Funny thing is, I can't drive (as I am disabled and spent a lot of time in hospital as a young person), but it's never stopped me travelling. In fact, I love travelling by bus and especuially train (in Europe) which is an adventure.
It's romantic and interesting, and you meet all kinds of people you would never meet just strapped into your car. You also get to meet great cab drivers, and can find out more about a city from asking others.

So, being able to drive doesn't mean you can do what you want. Doing what you want means being independent in your thoughts and feelings as well as your actions.

When I was younger I took drugs and got in with some awful people becasue I wanted to be free and to rebel: I was lucky to survive as I saw friends die from overdoses and freaking out. So don't rush into any behaviour just to fit in or impress people, as you might regret it.

Your parents will be very concerned about your safety and well-being. This isn't because they want to control you, it's because they love you and don't want you to be hurt. Trust them, unless they are genuinely hurting you.

If anyone hurts you, or treats you badly, go to Children's Services, or the local police or social workers, and they will genuinely help.

I had a bad time as a young person, so I dont want to be young again, but I still remember Xmas with my Mum and sisters; I still recall great times even though I had some awful experiences, at school.

Even then, negative experiences can help me help others. I don't have children, but I do help my nephews and nieces with their life-challenges - especially if their parents are being too controlling. It is good to have a friend in the family you can go to for support.

From later years, I have drawings and poetry and letters from all sorts of people - famous people, neighbours, colleagues and people I loved in all different ways.

You are so lucky to be at the beginning of that adventure, but I know at the moment, it doesn't always feel clear what to do. Try talking to older friends, or maybe a sister or cousin.
If you do go onto the internet, do not give away your age or location. Do not meet anyone from the interent, and make sure you are safe.

But asking questions is one of the great things about life, and just build up your confidence slowly: try keeping a diary or writing poems as this is a great way to express yourself and to communicate
The next few years are going to be crazy for you - exciting, frustrating, scary, fun - so keep grounded by making a journal or scrapbook; take photos or make paintings. You will treasure the feelings as you get older.

Take care
Ron

22. Nah stay 13 it's well better. You don't need a job, after your homework you can just chill - schoolwork is not a stress compared to working. Also with a car comes bills, road tax, having to work to pay for it....yada yada! Also you can't do what you want at any age, you can do more but get restricted by other things...sorry!!! Hope had a nice Christmas!

I'm 32. I like 32 but I still want to be millions of years old. Hopefully in a couple million years. Be happy with 13. Driving is scary and bills suck.

I am 43. I sometimes wish I was younger but I am enjoying life.

Don't wish to be old too quickly; you will find that time really does fly and one day you will look back and think 'gee, where did all the years go?' Just enjoy having the best years of your life and making memories.
