There's a long history from Mozart to Bobby McFerrin.
A vocalist who transcends generations is Tony Bennett.
In the overall jazz/pop era, covering 1930 until now, I would say Duke Ellington.
For female vocalist I would choose Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughn.
EVER? J.S. Bach developed the equal-tempered musical scale. 12 steps to the octave. Perfection.

I'm a guitarists so naturally im going to have to go with Eric Clapton. Some of the riffs he wrote absolutely blow me away. Even today, when i saw him play live in Sydney (Earlier this year)he still maintains a high standard of playing...check him out. He also played a major roll in writing songs for Cream, one of my favourite bands....check him/them out
