Is there a router we have to have or something??

Check that it is wi-fi ready that it has a built in adapter.
You will need a wireless router to use wi-fi
or plug a broadband modem into the ethernet port
If you have a wireless router then on the laptop there is a switch to turn the wireless on have a look for it. It could be on the side or the front edge.

First you need to buy Internet. Bastard of a thing that usually charges line rental. Then you'll have to buy a Wireless Router or Miniport. It can receive the information from the Internet and send it wirelessly to your sons computer. They will set you back about $70-$100+. Then you have to get it to work properly.
Although if you have another computer that has wireless LAN, you can connect to the Internet through that other computer. But this is also difficult.
Trust me, setting up wireless is a long and arduous task. Took us about 2-3 months to get to work, and we had a lot of help from our computer guy. But you may get someone really good at networking

yes you need and ISD(internet service provider). Aur going to need a wireless router. but you can also go to a wifi hot spot and pick up the signal.
